[ Aikman claims A-Side at Senior Mixed Zones ]

[Feb 22]: Congratulations to Rik Aikman, and his team of Shelley Higgerty, Mike Renton, and Diane Aikman on claiming the A-Side title at the OCA Senior Mixed Zones at Shelburne this past weekend. The team now advances to Regionals at Galt Country Club from March 27-28. The Aikman rink was one of 6 Chinguacousy rinks at Shelburne with Team Les Kovacs & Glen Gordon on the Senior Side while Team Andrew McGaugh, Ray Husain & Stephen Nott were in the open mixed division. Team McGaugh made it to the B-Final losing on an extra end to Steve Oldford of Orangeville. Best of luck to Team Aikman in a few weeks!

[ OCA Goldrush of Success ]

[Feb 17]: This past weekend proved to be a goldrush of OCA success for Ching teams at the Junior & Bantam Mixed Zones at Milton and the OCA Colts & Trophy competitions in Brampton. The youth success was led by Andrew McGaugh, and his team of Ginger Coyle, Mike McGaugh, Frances Pritchard, and coach Brad Sheridan who claimed the A-Side of Junior Mixed. Younger sister Emily McGaugh lost the A-Side final of Bantam Mixed, but then rebounded to claim the B-Side with her teammates Thomas Pritchard, Gillian Pritchard, Justin Gutierrez and coach Dave Pritchard. They are all cousins and for Thomas and Justin, it was their first badge. Also, this was Justin’s first OCA competition. Both teams now advance to Regionals at North Halton on March 13 & 14. In adult action, Ray Husain led his team to the A-Side victory in the OCA Colts event with Dan Nadon, Stephen Nott and Pat Arbuthnot. For Ray, it was his first OCA adult competition and first OCA badge. On the women’s side, Barbara Diamond and her sisters, Ruth Pritchard, Fiona Diamond, and Catherine Diamond claimed the A-Side victory while Susan Burnside claimed the 10B spot (4 spots to regionals available for the ladies) with her team of Meagan Trevail, Torie Boynton, and Kaitlyn Rankin. These 3 teams now advance to regionals at Meaford on March 6 & 7. Congratulations to all and good luck!!!

[ OCA Round-Up ]

[Feb 10]: Congratulations to the OCA Masters Women’s team of Elaine Klassen, Chris Nowak, Irene Wilson and Lila Forester for advancing to Provincials from Feb 17-20th at Renfrew. They claimed the “B” Side spot at Gravenhurst during Regionals 2 weekends ago. Also competing for Ching at Gravenhurst was Team Rita Betts (Shelley Higgerty, Jean McCutcheon, and Diane Rosehart) and Team Glenn Christie (Bill Matheson, John Keast, and Mike Lavine). We also had a strong showing at the OCA Best Western Challenge & Fairfield Marriott Challenge Provincials. The women’s event (Best Western) had strong representation from Team Susan Burnside & Team Susan Baird while Dave Furness’ men’s rink made it to the “C” Event final losing to Charlie Kodors by a 7:4 score. Finally, Team Andrew McGaugh represented the Ching youth at OCA Pepsi Junior Men’s Provincials at Teeswater with an impressive 4-3 record and amongst the 4 strongest teams of the week. Way to go to all Ching teams at various levels of OCA competition and good luck to all teams in the final OCA events of the season!

[ More Youth Success! ]

[Dec 23]: Chinguacousy’s youth are burning a trail of success this season, and the past weekends have not bucked this trend. In OCA Schoolboys play at Orangeville, Mike McGaugh’s Notre Dame SS rink of Tristan Kodors (third), Alex Miller (second), Matthew Miller (lead) and coach Cathy Diamond claimed the Zone 9 A-Side victory and advance to Shelburne (Jan. 30-31) with Shannon Fountain’s rink from Banting Memorial HS who claimed the Schoolgirls B-Side spot. Meanwhile, Emily McGaugh’s rink of Gillian Pritchard, Rachel Dobbs, Shelby Bailey, and coach Cathy Diamond claimed the OCA Bantam Girls Zone 9 A-Side spot and now advance to Regionals in Bradford (Jan. 16-17). For Gillian, Rachel, and Shelby (first year out of little rocks), these were their first OCA Badges. Finally, Team Andrew McGaugh claimed 2nd place at the Ontario Jr. Curling Tour stop in Thornhill losing the final to the #1 ranked team in Ontario Junior Curling (Matt Camm). Andrew’s team now sit #2 in Ontario heading into the TCA Bonspiel after Christmas. Congratulations to all and best of luck!

[ Three Teams off to OCA Challenge Provincials!!! ]

[Dec 09]: Ching will be well represented once again at both the OCA Best Western Challenge & Fairfield Marriott Challenge Provincials at the end of January as three teams struck success in qualifying zones at Stayner last weekend. Dave Furness and his team of Dan Dempsey, Francis Walsh, and Howard Steele started the streak off by winning the A-Side of the Men’s event. The women quickly followed suit on Sunday with Susan Burnside quickly getting through the A-Side with her team of Meagan Trevail, Torie Boynton, and Kaitlyn Rankin and was then followed up by Susan Baird, Trudy Burnside, Heather McGinniton, and Robbin Coedy in claiming the B-Side zone spot. The men’s side also featured defending champions Darrin Harkness who lost the B-Final to Warren Craig of Brampton and Grant Burnside’s rink who finished 1-2. Good luck to all teams as they head to Provincials from January 22-24 at Prince Edward & Stirling for the Women and Trenton & Brighton for the men!

[ Team Andrew McGaugh off to Junior Provincials!!! ]

[Dec 02]: Andrew McGaugh and his Chinguacousy team of Robert Wright, Evan DeViller & Joel Waters have claimed the Region 3 “B” Side title in Elora over Scott Brandon of Coldwater and now advance to Junior Provincials from January 2-6 at Teeswater. For Andrew, this will be his 3rd straight appearance at Junior Provincials having played the last two with Simon Barrick. Team McGaugh now sit atop the Ontario Junior Curling Tour Rankings tied with Team Matt Camm (Navan CC) after their OCA performance and an OJCT win in Brampton, Semi-Finalists at Kitchener-Waterloo and “B” Semi-Finalists at London. In Region 2, there was more success for Ching Junior Men as Josh Hall playing lead for Michael Bryson’s squad from Annandale (OJCT Ranking #15) advanced to Junior Provincials after claiming the “A” Side at Thornhill. Meanwhile, Ching’s Mike McGaugh and Bryan Mitchell hooked up with Pedro Malvar and Adam Tambosso of Richmond Hill, but came up a game short of advancing to Provincials against a tough Connor Duhaime foursome from Peterborough (OJCT #8). On the girls side, Shannon Fountain’s Chinguacousy Rink qualified automatically for Region 3 playdowns as the only registrant in Zone 9 playdowns, but unfortunately came up short in their quest to get to Provincials. Also playing in Region 3 was Caitlin Sheriff as second thrower for Deni Clarke’s foursome from Blue Water (who also advanced automatically to Region 3 after no teams registered in Zone 11). Up in Zone 8, Frances Pritchard played with former Ching member Ginger Coyle out of Mississauga Golf & Country Club, but came up slightly short in advancing to Regions. Congratulations to all Ching Juniors on fine efforts throughout the cashspiel and competitive season and good luck to Team McGaugh & Team Bryson at Provincials!

[ Team Andrew McGaugh claims OJCT Brampton Title! ]

[Oct 18]: Team Andrew McGaugh has claimed the 2009 Brampton Junior Cashspiel after a final victory over reigning Ontario Junior Champion Bowie Abbis-Mills. McGaugh’s team included Robert Wright, Mitchell Sheridan, and Evan Devillers. The team started off the competition 0-2 in round-robin before rattling off six straight victories to claim the title which is part of the Ontario Junior Curling Tour and featured both 24 junior men’s and 24 junior women’s teams competing at both the Brampton and Chinguacousy Curling Clubs. Also from Chinguacousy was Mike McGaugh and Bryan Mitchell who competed as second and lead respectively for Richmond Hill’s Pedro Malvar who finished the competition at 1-4; Josh Hall playing as lead for Michael Bryson finished at 3-2; Frances Pritchard on the women’s side competing as second for Ginger Coyle finished 2-3. Congratulations to all, and best of luck for continued success as the OJCT continues leading into OCA Zone playdowns in November!

[ Little Rocker Tobin Haas’ Brave Battle with Cancer ]

[Sep 29]: One of our Sunday Little Rockers, Tobin Haas, sadly diagnosed with brain cancer since 2002 has had a recurrence of this disease diagnosed in June. [ Team Kovacs finishes 2nd at Senior Mixed Provincials ]

[Apr 20]: Chinguacousy Curling Club’s Senior Mixed team skipped by Les Kovacs had a very successful week earning second place honours at the Ontario Curling Association’s Senior Mixed Provincial Championship held in Beaverton from April 8-11. Kovacs with his wife Cathy, second Pat Arbuthnot, and lead Catherine Diamond finished the round-robin with a 5-2 record which included a win over the eventual champions from Ottawa (Rideau CC) skipped by Layne Noble in the first game. The team lost their final game in the 10th end against Carlton Place to just miss out on a tie-breaker with Noble for the championship. Congratulations on an excellent job! [ Wendy Bodhaine -- Marv White Award Winner 2009! ]

[Apr 09]: Congratulations to this year’s Marv White Award Winner, Wendy Bodhaine! Wendy has been an enthusiastic and active participant in our club both as a curler and volunteer for many years. This past season, Wendy and her husband Joe took on the role of teaching our little rockers on Wednesdays, and have also been recently involved in the successful sale of ticket packages for the upcoming Grand Slam of Curling event coming to Mississauga in the fall. Wendy can always be found around the club helping others where need be and always with a big smile and infectious cheer that is so pleasant to be around. Thank you Wendy for your hard work and dedication over the years, and your continued efforts in the years beyond!

[ Ching rinks go 3-for-3 at Mixed Regionals ]

[Mar 10]: Chinguacousy’s awesome year in OCA events continued this past weekend when 3 rinks competing in regional mixed events advanced to Provincials. The youth division’s strong showing this year continued as Team Andrew McGaugh with Ginger Coyle, Mitchel Sheridan, and Frances Pritchard advanced to Junior Mixed Provincials through the B-Side at Ayr. Michael McGaugh and his rink matched the feat in the Bantam division through the A-Side with his rink of Shannon Fountain, Bryan Mitchell, and Emily McGaugh. Both rinks will play Provincials at Marmora from Mar. 25th-28th. The senior mixed rink of Les Kovacs, Cathy Kovacs, Pat Arbuthnot, and Cathy Diamond kept up with the young guns by taking a late night B-Side win at Chesley on Sunday to advance to Provincials in Beaverton from April 8th-11th. Congratulations and best of luck to all rinks on continued success at Provincials!
